After Hayley Mills, my first love was books. My weekly trip to the library downtown was the highlight of my summers. I still remember the pride I felt when I was handed my very own library card (pale blue for juveniles) with the official metal tag stamped with my membership number. The library only allowed cardholders to check out six books at a time, so I would have my mom use her card (pale yellow for adults) to take care of the overflow.
I think I was about four years old when it dawned on me that authors were just people who put words on paper for me to read. The revelation that I could be one of those people was an epiphany equal to that of Archimedes watching his bathwater rise.
